From Vision to Reality: Photographing an Air Ambulance Crew at Denver Health Medical

Every now and then, a photography assignment feels like the realization of a long-held vision. My recent photo shoot for Denver Health Medical, a major hospital in downtown Denver, was one of those moments that brought me back to a pivotal experience early in my career.

Years ago, I walked into the building of a major air ambulance company and was immediately drawn to a large framed photograph on the wall. It wasn’t just a quick snapshot—it was a carefully crafted image that transported you right into the middle of the action. You could feel the energy and urgency of the moment. It captured the tension of a life at stake, unfolding on a helipad with a medical crew working under pressure. The composition, lighting, and post-production details were all designed to immerse you in that scene, and from that moment, I knew I wanted to create something that could evoke those same emotions.

Fast forward to last month, when I had the chance to photograph an air ambulance crew on the helipad of Denver Health. It was a dream come to life, and I knew I had to approach it with the same level of craft I had admired in that original image. My goal was not only to capture the professionalism of the medical team but to bring viewers right into the heart of the action—to feel the urgency, the high stakes, and the energy of the moment.

I love assignments like this because they take me into places where most people would never find themselves. There’s something exhilarating about being on a helipad with an air ambulance team, knowing that lives are at stake. It was important to me that the final images didn’t just look polished but also pulled the viewer into the middle of the action, as if they were standing right there on the helipad with the team, feeling the intensity of the life-saving work happening before them.

This assignment was everything I hoped it would be. It took me right into the action, gave me the opportunity to create something that felt both real and elevated, and reminded me of why I love this kind of work.
