Capturing Community Spirit: A Photography Assignment for the CDC Foundation

I recently had the chance to work on a truly uplifting photography project with the CDC Foundation. The assignment was all about photographing a special event called “Very Happy Holigay,” which took place in Greeley, Colorado, right in Weld County. The event was designed to offer free health check-ups and advice to the local community, all wrapped up in a festive holiday atmosphere.

My job was to capture the magic of the event through my photography. I aimed to showcase the heartfelt moments and genuine smiles of people as they took advantage of the health services and advice being offered. It was important to me to get those real, emotional expressions that showed just how grateful and happy the participants were.

Of course, no photography assignment is without its challenges. This time, the event was held in a dimly lit church, which made capturing the right shots a bit tricky. The low light meant I had to get creative with my techniques to ensure the photos still highlighted the warmth and positivity of the event. Despite the lighting hurdles, I’m thrilled with how the photos turned out and how they captured the vibrant community spirit.

I was especially excited about this assignment because it was organized by my long-time friend and amazing colleague, Courtney Singer. I first met Courtney back when I was at National Geographic TV & Film, where she was a producer on some pretty incredible projects. Our professional journey continued when I had the honor of being the director of photography for her fantastic documentary feature film, “Out of the Fire.” This film, which dives into the life of a renowned pottery maker in central Virginia, was a testament to her skill and dedication.

Getting to work with Courtney again on this photography project was a real treat and a reminder of our great professional connection. Her passion for storytelling and community work is truly inspiring, and I was so happy to support her vision through my photography.

In the end, the “Very Happy Holigay” event in Greeley was a wonderful reminder of the impact that community-focused initiatives can have. I’m grateful for the chance to be part of it and to contribute to the CDC Foundation’s mission of promoting health and well-being through my photography. It was an experience that allowed me to capture the joy and gratitude of the participants and highlighted the importance of community and connection.
